“Vision over the Cathedral” is a Symbolist watercolor by Belarusian artist-philosopher Valery Lyashkevich, whose works are held in museums and private collections worldwide. In this composition, spiritual imagery, the urban architecture of Gomel, human figures, and striking color contrasts merge into a multilayered philosophical metaphor about the fate of a nation and the moral challenges of modernity. Through the interplay of color, light, and form, the artist reveals the internal contradictions of society and also a hope for spiritual renewal.

Report Abuse”Vision over the Cathedral” is a work by Valery Lyashkevich, a legendary homeless Belarusian artist known for his profound philosophical approach to painting. Born in Gomel, he has spent decades living and creating his works outdoors in harsh conditions — on city streets, in building entrances, and at train stations. Despite lacking a permanent home and studio, Lyashkevich tirelessly continues to paint, contemplating in his art the grandeur of culture, complex social processes, philosophical ideas, and spiritual quests.
His art, imbued with deep symbolism, does not fit into traditional frameworks. He seeks to reveal the interconnectedness of an individual’s fate with that of an entire nation and civilization. Lyashkevich’s paintings are valued for their conceptual richness, subtle color transitions, delicate lines, and multilayered metaphors.
“Vision over the Cathedral” is a vivid example of his approach. In the foreground, one sees the cathedral and the Paskevich family chapel-mausoleum, divided by light and shadow, hinting at the ambiguity of history and the coexistence of faith, power, and the people.
Created with watercolor under the challenging conditions of street life, this painting stands as a powerful testimony to Valery Lyashkevich’s creative spirit and his belief that art can address the most essential questions of existence and inspire the quest for answers.
